Guide To Laser Printing For Home Office

What does Laser Printing mean?

Laser printing was invented by Xerox in the early 1970's in an effort to print “anything” instead of previous attempts to simply reproduce text. The Laser printers output involves an electrostatic process that produces not only very high-quality text but also graphics by using a laser beam to negatively charged a cylinder drum to define a positively charged image. The drum then attracts powdered ink that has been electrically charged and then transfers the image to paper. A heating process then occurs to lock the image onto the transfer medium.

Originally produced for business office use, the technology is now widely used in both the home and office and the process is used to print on many things in addition to paper.

How expensive is laser printing?

For the most part, your initial investment (meaning the purchase price of a printer) in Laser printing will be higher but the cost per page to print will be better than inkjet printing over time.

What is the difference between OEM and Compatible toner?

OEM (which stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer) toner printer cartridges are made by the same company that produced your laser printer and fit the specs of the toner cartridge that come with your printer when you purchased it new.  OEM toners are generally more expensive than compatible toner cartridges so this could be a major difference for you to consider.

“Compatible” toner is a broad term that can mean that the toner cartridge is a generic brand that is completely new but it produced by a 3rd party company unrelated to the manufacturer of your printer,  or, is an OEM Cartridge that has been recycled, refurbished with either new or refurbished parts and refilled. The main benefit of compatible toner is they are significantly cheaper than their OEM counterparts.  The remanufactured compatible toner offered by ForMyDesk.com  are constructed using recycled single-use cores with new drums.

Although print quality and reliability in compatible toners vary greatly ForMyDesk.com has specifically chosen Evergreen, IBM and Xerox, and others carefully for their commitment to providing equivalent print standards and a 100% guarantee.

Evergreen toners all conform to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification standards. What that means to you is that Evergreen is verified to have a quality control system in place that meets the highest standards of the international manufacturing community. All Evergreen cartridges meet or exceed the performance of the OEM product and are completely compatible to the same.

IBM Replacement Toner for HP LaserJet Printers offers image quality and yields that are equal to or better than OEM HP products.

And, like Evergreen products, all IBM Replacements are ISO certified in yield and manufacturing.

IBM even offers a 2 year 100%  guarantee.

What is laser printing paper?

Laser copy paper is manufactured specifically to be used for printing in laser printer machines.  Realistically you can run good quality copy paper through Laser printers, but laser paper is designed with differences in weight, brightness, and finish that produces a superior image on the final product.

Generally speaking, Laser paper is heavier than copy paper. Standard copy paper is rated at 20lbs. (meaning that a ream-or 500 sheets of 17x22 inch sheets weigh 20 pounds)  Standard laser paper is can weigh anywhere from 24 to 28 lbs.  Another difference is the brightness of the papers. White paper’s brightness levels are rated at 80 to 100 with the higher numbers correlating to a brighter paper. Standard copy paper can fall between 80 to a high of 85. Laser papers range from 90 to 100. Although both copy and laser paper have smooth finished, laser paper is actually finer so it gives it a softer feel and higher quality look. Finally, laser paper is generally thicker and has a higher opacity than copy paper which is particularly helpful if you plan on printing on both sides of the page.
